    1. Hello! In my ponds, I adopt a combination of natural food and commercial feeds. At the start of the cropping year after I do pond draining, apply teaseed powder, fertilize, and prepare my ponds, I let "lablab" or naturally growing micro-benthic food grow before I stock my bangus fry. We apply fry mash as supplement from age 1 week to 3 weeks. Then starter feeds from 4 weeks to 6 weeks. Juvenile feeds from 7 weeks to 10 weeks. Then adult feeds thereafter until we harvest, when the bangus reaches the weight of around 250 grams per piece. For quantity we use as guideline: 4% of body weight for adult and juvenile feeds, and 3% of body weight for starter feeds. Fry mash is based on rough estimate, depending on quantity of "lablab" in the pond.

Sometimes, we buy "lumut" (filamentous grass-green algae) from outside suppliers as substitute for starter or juvenile feeds.

To get the actual kilos of feeds for the day, get the average weight of one bangus (based on samples), multiply by 3% or 4%, multiply by the number of bangus that you stocked in your particular pond. That would be your total kilos of feeds for the day. We feed 3 times a day, so we divide the total kilos for the day by 3 and we get the total feed weight to be given per feeding. Thanks for your nice question and comments and good luck!

    1. Hello sir! Sorry my Binmaley ponds are too small (2.2 has.) to need additional outside capital from an investor or partner. My own working capital would suffice. So I have to respectfully turn down any investment proposal.

Nonetheless, I suggest, for a would-be fish farmer, to go it alone, be directly involved in running and managing the ponds himself. No need for a partner, unless it's really a big project. Most importantly, to stay there (if possible) and choose a really honest, hardworking, trustworthy caretaker.

I myself stay at my ponds for 6 days, then go back to Quezon City and stay there 9 days, then 6 days back to the ponds, etc. I monitor all activities especially when I'm away. I can afford to do so, because I have a trusty, reliable caretaker. And I keep track of all financials and also keep a record of all activities (financial, operational or maintenance). We keep a record of everything, myself and my caretaker. When I'm there I do detailed checking and audit. I schedule all important pond activities (fry stocking, partial harvests, pond draining, pond preparation, etc.) only when I'm st the farm.

See my blog post on the "dirty tricks in bangus farming" to have an idea as to how "losses" are incurred. Thanks and regards.

  3. Hi Sir

What is the average salary of a fish pond caretaker per month ? Is it based on the size of fish pond or the volume of fish. Also, how deep should the water be in the pond to use sinker fish feed.

By the way, I enjoy reading your blogs, great info and very helpful. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi Ly! For compensation, I give my caretaker (overseer) half of year's net profit after deducting operating expenses plus an imputed annual pond rental. I take care of fixed costs, like electricity and water because I live in the farm too, part of the time. I also give other incentives.

You can read my post on How to Start a Bangus (Milkfish) Farm - Part 2 where I covered compensation for pond caretakers.

As to depth of water, our ponds have an average depth of 1 to 1.6 meters deep, depending on season. We use floater feeds, which are applicable to bangus raised in ponds. Sinker feeds are normally used in raising bangus in fish cages or pens along the rivers, coastal areas, or lakes. Regards!

    1. Hello again! For Class A ponds, adjacent a stream or river in a good location, rental per hectare runs anywhere from P50,000 to 60,000 a year. For Class B, you can rent the pond at P35,000 to 45,000 nowadays. This is just my personal opinion. Actual rental is of course subject to negotiation between lessor and lessee.
